A selective two step-reaction sequence to convert furan into benzoic acid is demonstrated.  Lewis-acid containing zeolite beta was shown to catalyze the Diels-Alder reaction of furan and methyl acrylate.  The resulting product was dehydrated in binary mixtures of methanesulfonic acid and acetic anhydride to produce methyl benzoate in 96% selectivity.
