We present a combined experimental and computational study that clearly defines the mechanistic roles of water, surface hydroxyls, and the metal-support interface in CO oxidation over Au/TiO2 catalysts. Water is shown to facilitate the reaction by proton donation. Our results provide a fresh framework to interpret existing literature observations.
