One-step valorization of lignin in supercritical ethanol has been developed. High monomer yield (60-86 wt%) with little char formation is possible from soda, organosolv and Kraft lignins. Compelling evidence is given for the role of ethanol capping agent of aromatics to prevent repolymerization, as formaldehyde scavenger and hydrogen source.
