Kinetics of Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of levulinic acid in the aqueous phase to form γ-valerolactone (GVL) was investigated. GVL is produced via two distinct hydrogenation pathways; formation via intramolecular esterification of 4-hydroxypentanoic acid dominates at lower temperatures. The presence of the aqueous phase is found to alter Ru nanoparticle stability.
