Water splitting offers a promising means of electrochemical energy storage.  However current implementation of this technology is limited by low efficiencies at the oxygen anode.  We use density-functional theory to explore the effects of nanostructure on device efficiency and report nanometer-sized channels greatly improve activity for some catalysts.
