We provide fundamental insight into increased reaction rates for acid-catalyzed biomass conversion reactions using polar aprotic solvents compared to reactions carried out in water by suggesting that these polar aprotic compounds affect the reaction kinetics by changing the stabilization of the acidic proton relative to the protonated transition state.
