Electro-catalysts based on nitrogen-doped carbon are an interesting potential alternative to precious metal catalysts.  Improved activity relative to platinum is required for wide-scale commercial adoption, but large improvements may be possible as the active site is better understood.  Potential applications include fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and industrial electrolysis processes.
