In situ characterizations revealed that atomic Cu steps, induced by planar defects and lattice strain, serve as oxygenation sites. χ-Fe5C2 chain-growth sites intimately surround the defective and strained form of Cu surface, resulting in a synergetic effect between Cu–FexCy dual sites for high selectivity higher alcohol synthesis from syngas.
