Highly functionalized biomass-derived compounds are difficult to selectively upgrade. Addition of oxophillic metals to supported catalysts can increase C-O bond activation and deoxygenation selectivity. However, the mechanism for the improvements is not known. Surface science techniques complimented by supported catalyst studies have been used to better understand these systems.
