A cationic cobalt(II) alkyl complex was found to be a highly effective pre-catalyst for the hydrogenation of olefins, aldehydes, ketones and imines, and the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols, which represents a significant advance inearth-abundant metal catalysis.
