We show that homogeneous catalysts convert synthesis gas into ethanol at rates comparable to the best heterogeneous catalysts at temperatures below 220°C, but with exceptional selectivity; losses of CO to CH4 are <1mol.%. The homogeneous catalysts also convert methanol into ethanol and catalyze the water-gas shift reaction in liquid solution.
