Homogeneous tin salts are excellent catalysts for the conversion of tetroses to new four-carbon alpha-hydroxy acid platform molecules. Even at room temperature remarkable activities were displayed. An elaborated reaction pathway is proposed and corroborated with an in situ NMR study, labeling and control experiments.
