Diquaternary ammonium surfactants are able to pre-organize silicate anions into a mesoporous silica containing already micropores and local fragments reminiscent of the final crystalline zeolite nanosheet structure. A formation mechanism involving Si33 building units interacting in a specific manner with the alkyl chains of the template is confirmed.
