When low levels of sulphur are added to iron catalysts during Fischer-Tropsch, the sulphur acts as a promoter for the production of light olefins, isotopic labelling experiments are employed to gain further understanding. The results suggest a selective hydrogenation effect which is investigated further by micro-kinetic modelling of the data.
