By using ruthenium on various oxides (e.g. Al2O3) and also coal, carbon dioxide can hydrogenated to formic acid and derivatives. Formic acid is an promising candidate not only as an energy-storage material but also as an way to connect CO2 with the value chain by dehydration to CO.
