Hydrodeoxygenation of 4-methyl-1,2-benzenediol was investigated using supported platinum, nickel and nickel-molybdenum in order to identify potential HDO catalysts for upgrading bio-oils.  Pt and sulphided Ni-Mo performed very well with yields up to 64 g liquid hydrocarbons/100 g CH3C6H3(OH)2.  Differences in HDO reaction pathway were identified between Pt and sulphided Ni-Mo.
