We studied the hydrolytic hydrogenation of cellulose to sorbitol for Ru supported on a series of materials with a range of inherent surface acid/base properties or modified with functional groups to enhance the surface acidity. Ru/NbOPO4 is significantly more active and selective towards hexitols than all other metal oxides studied.
