Photodeposition of gold nanoparticles enhances the hydrogenation rate in photocatalytic CO2 reduction on isolated titanate species on silica. Product formation from contaminants is ruled out. Without gold, a carbon pool accumulates on the catalyst and higher hydrocarbons are formed. The results contribute to the understanding and systematic improvement of photocatalysts.
