When Pt/Al2O3 is used as a catalyst for biomass conversion in aqueous phase oxygenates with multiple functional groups can form stable surface species. These carbonaceous deposits protect the alumina support against hydrolysis to boehmite in hot liquid water, and limit sintering of supported metal particles.
