PtIICl42- oxidizes methane to methanol and methyl chloride at 100 atm in strong acid.  These anions adsorbed on oxide supports, convert propane and oxygen to chlorinated and oxygenated products at atmospheric pressure.  Analysis under reaction conditions indicates that Pt(IV) is the active catalyst and that re-oxidation is rate limiting.
