Role of ceria addition in TixCe1-xO2 adsorbent for deep desulfurization was clarified through DFT calculations. Thiophene is adsorbed strongly through binding with O-rich sites, whereas ceria favors the formation of O-rich sites through changing the relative surface formation energies of anatase and serves as an oxygen source.
