The results of this work clearly show that pentacoordinate Al³⁺ sites located exclusively on the (100) facets of γ-Al₂O₃ are the active centers in alcohol dehydration reactions. This is the first example that clearly correlates reactivity of a high surface area catalyst with a certain crystal facet of the material.
