A new approach to deconstruct and convert lignin to hydrocarbons combining hydrolysis and protection of the phenol group that prevents phenol repolymerization is presented. The resulting phenolic oil is hydrodeoxygenated in aqueous phase using dual functional catalysis. Kinetic measurements show the balance between metal and acid functions to be critical.
