Highly dispersed, supported Ta, originally developed for selective epoxidation, are new catalysts for hydrodenitrogenation, either alone or as promoter for noble metals. Although slow, relative hydrogenolysis are high vs. ring hydrogenation of quinolines, minimizing H2 consumption per N removed. Synergistic effects between Ta and noble metal are observed.
