Aqueous-phase hydrogenation of acetic acid on several monometallic catalysts have been performed experimentally, revealing systematic trends in activity and selectivity for ethanol which are interpreted by DFT calculations to reveal the importance of metals’ intrinsic reactivity and the reaction conditions, providing insights for developing efficient catalysts for biomass feedstock processing.
