Alkane activation and methanol dehydration rates on FAU zeolites depend only on the number of H+, determined rigorously by titration studies during catalysis. These sites are equivalent in acid strength and are titrated stoichiometrically by Na+. Thermal and chemical treatments influence catalytic behavior by changing the solvation properties of supercages.
