Adsorptive removal of nitrate anions from water was conducted on ammonium-functionalized mesoporous silica materials synthesized via co-condensation and post-synthesis grafting using two organosilane precursors, aminopropyltriethoxysilane and N-((trimethoxysilyl)propyl)-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride. The materials synthesized using the former organosilane necessitate an acidification step before their use as adsorbents while the others are used directly.
