The fundamental basis for selective removal of trans-isomers from a hydrogenated oil sample via sorptive and size exclusion phenomena is investigated. ZSM-5 appears the best choice to distinguish between the trans chain and the cis chain. A shape-selective Pt/ZSM-5 catalyst allows selective hydrogenation of the trans-isomer and the (regio)selective hydrogenation of triglycerides.
