Our group has investigated a new approach to altering product selectivity that uses self-assembled monolayers to influence the near-surface environment on supported cataltysts.  This technique was employed to enhance the selectivity to the desired product during epoxybutene hydrogenation from 15% to 90% using catalysts modified with alkanethiol monolayers.
