The liquid-phase MgO-promoted glycerolysis of oleic acid (C18:1) methyl ester for monoglyceride synthesis was studied to transform a biomass-derived resource, glycerol, into fine chemicals. Catalytic results, characterization techniques and DFT calculations indicate that strong low-coordination surface oxygen anions promote glycerol OH dissociation and monoglyceride formation.
