A simple preparation method of hierarchically-structured silicalite-1 catalyst by treating silicalite-1 with NaOH aq.  This treatment resulted in the formation of mesopores with 10-50 nm without damage of micropores.  The external surface area extended by the alkali treatment contributed to the enhancement of catalytic activity of silicalite-1 for the Beckmann rearrangement.
