Palladium catalysts on various supports were studied for hydrogenation of nitrite. Internal concentration gradients of nitrite are influencing the selectivity significantly. Carbon based catalysts were more selective towards ammonia as compared to oxidic supports, which is attributed fast diffusion of protons combined with electron-conductivity through the support, generating hydrogen electro-chemically.
