Increase in Mo loading beyond 22% over functionalized mesoporous carbon resulted in reduced dispersion, pore blockage and reduced HDS activity. Lower Ni/Mo ratio is sufficient for efficient promotion of Mo over mC surface for creating qualitatively Type-II like NiMoS phase.  HDS activity of this optimum catalyst  >> commercial catalyst.
