Surface species present during oxide formation, oxygen reduction, and hydrogen adsorption on a Pt electrode were observed via in-situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).  This technique can elucidate various electrochemical mechanisms of interest, which serves to guide the design of alternative electrocatalyst materials.
