A nickel citrate complex is used as the nickel precursor in the preparation of hydrotreating catalysts resulting in increased Type II sites on sulfidation. The bond lengths, coordination number and stacking degree are calculated by the analysis of XAS data. Optimum ratio of Ni/Citric acid and Mo/Phosphorus is determined.
