A series of high surface area Group V and VI transition metal carbides and nitrides was synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The most active materials were Mo2C and W2C. The Mo2C surface was capable of direct CO dissociation without H2 assistance, suggesting the reaction follows the carbide mechanism.
