In situ/operando optical spectroscopic characterization methods (Raman, IR, UV-vis, and photoluminescence (PL)) were used to give further insight into the structure-photoactivity relationship of tantalum-based photocatalysts.  Surface characterization of the outer most layers of the photocatalysts was also accomplished which will help guide further surface modifications for improved photocatalytic H2 generation.
