Selective conversion of glycerol into high yields of 1,2-propanediol in absence of added hydrogen is possible with Pt impregnated NaY zeolite characterized by extra-zeolitic metal particles combined with zeolite Brønsted acidity. The patented catalytic process is assumed to generate an autogeneous reducing environment, allowing in-situ hydrogenolysis of glycerol into 1,2-propanediol.
