This work reveals that the level of hydrogenation of surface intermediates, as dictated by the hydrocarbon structure and the prevalent H2 pressure, and the concentration of reactive surface hydrogen determine turnover rates and selectivities during hydrogenolysis reactions of aromatics and cycloalkanes.
