The carbon selectivity for higher alcohols over Rb-promoted 5 wt% Mo2C/MgO can reach 43% on a CO2-free basis, with C1-C4 hydrocarbons and methanol as the main byproducts. In-situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) indicates passivated Mo2C/MgO has a highly-dispersed oxycarbide-like structure, which can be partially reduced in reaction.
