In this contribution we show that the promising results on gold-catalyzed aerobic cyclohexane oxidation, as reported on in a variety of recent publications, are obscured by an inaccurate product analysis. A detailed mechanistic study provided proof for a radical-chain oxidation mechanism, which inevitably causes severe by-product formation and low selectivity.
