Ligand removal by thermal treatment under different gaseous environments was investigated using infrared spectroscopy for a series of ligand-capped metal and metal phosphide nanoparticle catalysts supported on silica. These studies suggested that incorporating phosphorous changed the ligand removal pathway from desorption to decomposition, highlighting the influence of nanoparticle composition.
