The selectivity of benzylalcohol oxidation catalyzed by VO(acac)2 with t-butylhydroperoxide is lowered by decarbonylation of benzaldehyde generating benzene. Immobilization of VO(acac)2 onto silica improves selectivity toward benzaldehyde over benzoic acid, but decarbonylation still occurs. Immobilization onto aminopropyl-silica lowers the conversion, but at low vanadium content, no benzene is formed.
