The hydrogenation of phenol and cyclohexanone on Pt/C and Pd/C in aqueous phase was investigated. Kinetics and DFT calculations show phenol hydrogenation to be structure-sensitive, in contrast to cyclohexanone hydrogenation; and rate variations induced by alcohol addition or catalyst pretreatment can be explained by poisoning, competitive adsorption, and restructuring effects.
