Using spatially resolved spectroscopy in a monochromated environmental transmission electron microscope, we are able to detect shifts in the energy of surface plasmon peaks associated with gas adsorption on metal nanoparticles. This technique permits identification of preferred surface facets for gas adsorption at a spatial resolution below the particle dimensions.
