Operando XAS, UV-Vis-NIR and Brønsted acidity measurements showed the presence of isolated Cu ions up to Cu/Al=0.2. Operando XAS measurements suggested that ammonia standard SCR operated via redox cycle involving Cu1+/Cu2+. Proximal Brønsted acid sites generated upon reduction of Cu2+ to Cu1+ played a crucial role in the reaction mechanism.
