The limiting factor in solid acid alkylation is avoiding olefin-olefin polymerization, which leads to rapid catalyst aging. We found that by limiting butene flux to the catalyst, we can reduce undesired polymerization, maintain conversion to alkylate, while significantly improving durability. Control of reaction and mass-transport rates underlie these improvements.
