Crystallographic nature of delta-Al2O3 is resolved based on HAADF STEM, XRD, NMR techniques. The structure is found to be highly complex; representing atomic level intergrowth from several closely related crystallographic variants. Thermodynamic information obtained from DFT calculations enabled to rationalize structural complexity of transition Al2O3 from high temperature heat treatments.
