Using isotopic labeling, this work investigates the role of both metal and Lewis acid catalysis on a mildly oxidized Ru/RuOx/C catalyst for enhanced furfural hydrodeoxygenation performance. The findings suggest the importance of studying bifunctional materials to aid in the design of bifunctional materials capable of enhancing reactivity of target reactions.
