The reactions of cholesterol over Pt/C, Pd/C and HZSM-5 catalysts in supercritical water treatment were investigated. Identifying and quantifying the products allowed elucidation of the reaction pathways of cholesterol in the hydrothermal catalytic upgrading of crude algae bio-oil. Characterization of the catalyst hydrothermal stability and activity was of high importance.
